Medical spa
A medical spa is a hotel or resort with its own medical department. Doctors examine, advise and guide the programmes, while the spa provides rest.

The difference from a classic wellness hotel is medicine. In a wellness hotel you get massages and saunas. In a medical spa the stay usually starts with a medical consultation, often with examinations, and the programme follows the result.
The focus varies widely: some houses are strong in diagnostics and check-ups, others in fasting and gut health, others in sleep, stress or exercise. That is why it pays to look at what a house can really do.
The term is not protected. A spa with a doctor on call may use it just as a resort with its own clinic. Look at the specialties in the house, the equipment and whether you get a report at the end.
Good to know
- Ask which specialists work permanently in the house.
- A good stay ends with a written result and recommendations.
- Medical services are often charged separately, on top of the room.

Frequently asked questions
Does health insurance pay for a medical spa?
Usually not. The stay is a private service. Individual medical examinations may be partly reimbursed for privately insured guests; check with your insurer beforehand.
What is the difference between a medical spa and a clinic?
A clinic treats sick people. A medical spa is for people who want to prevent, recover or do something for their health, and it feels like a hotel.
