Both promise rest, but they are very different. At a wellness hotel you relax; at a medical spa you work on your health with doctors. Here is what the difference is and what suits you.

At a glance
  • Doctors work at a medical spa; a wellness hotel is about relaxation.
  • A medical spa is worth it when you want to learn something about your health.
  • The term is not protected, so look at who actually works there.

What is a medical spa?

A medical spa is a hotel with its own medical department. Doctors, often of several specialities, examine, advise and accompany you during your stay. The spa complements the medicine, not the other way round.

Typical focuses are check-ups and prevention, fasting and gut health, sleep and stress, or healthy ageing. The term is not protected, so it is worth checking who actually works there.

What is a wellness hotel?

A wellness hotel is designed for relaxation: sauna, pool, massages, beauty treatments, good food. There are usually no medical staff. That is no disadvantage if you simply want to switch off.

At a medical spa, the spa complements the medicine, not the other way round.

The main differences

At a medical spa your stay usually begins with a medical consultation, and there is a plan of examinations and treatments. At a wellness hotel you put together your own programme.

At a medical spa you take home results and recommendations; at a wellness hotel, mainly rest. And prices: at a medical spa, medical packages usually come on top of the room.

When a medical spa is worth it

When you want to learn something about your health or work on it specifically, for example with a thorough check-up, a medically supervised fasting cure or a programme for better sleep. And when you want to do so in surroundings that do not feel like a clinic.

A wellness hotel is the better choice if you simply want to be pampered and would rather not have appointments.

How to recognise a serious medical spa

We selected every house on Luxly on this basis and portrayed it honestly, including who it suits less.

  • A permanent medical team with clear specialities
  • Its own diagnostics or partner clinics
  • Programmes with transparent content
  • A detailed final consultation
  • No promises of healing

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral for a medical spa?

No. You book the stay like a hotel, usually with a programme. The doctors on site discuss with you what makes sense.

Can I simply have a holiday at a medical spa?

Yes, many houses are full luxury hotels. The medical offers are an option, not an obligation.

Is a medical spa a clinic?

No. It is a hotel with medical services. For acute complaints, your doctor or a hospital comes first.

Terms briefly explained

Luxly does not provide medical advice. Whether a programme suits you is something to discuss with the house's medical team or your own doctor.

Still unsure which house suits you?

Tell the Luxly concierge what you are looking for. It answers honestly, even if that means: no house fits.
