Several appointments, waiting rooms, results by post: preventive care is often a chore in everyday life. More and more hotels bundle it into a few days, with a medical team on site and rest around it. Here is how it works and who it is worthwhile for.

At a glance
  • All examinations within a few days, with rest in between.
  • Two to four nights are enough for most packages.
  • A check-up does not replace your own doctor: take the results home.

What a check-up at a hotel is

You stay at a hotel with its own practice or medical centre and complete a package of examinations within a few days. Between appointments you have time for the spa, nature and good food. At the end there is a consultation in which all results are explained to you.

What is typically examined

Almost always: a detailed consultation, a physical examination and extensive blood tests. Often also heart and circulation with ECG and a stress test, ultrasound of the abdomen and blood vessels, lung function and body composition.

Depending on the house and package, imaging such as MRI, skin screening, sleep or stress analyses may be added. What matters is not measuring as much as possible, but the right things for your age, your family history and your questions.

Not measuring as much as possible, but the right things for you.

How long a check-up takes

A basic check-up is often done in one to two days. For extensive packages and a relaxed pace, three to four nights make sense. Some results, such as special lab values, only arrive after you leave.

Who preventive care on holiday is worthwhile for

People with little time who would rather bundle their appointments. Anyone who wants to know where they stand after a milestone such as a big birthday or a stressful period. And anyone who would rather have examinations in calm surroundings than between two meetings.

A check-up does not replace your own doctor. Take the results home and discuss them there too, so that someone looks after you in the long term.

What to look out for

You can ask the house these questions before booking:

  • Which examinations are included in the package?
  • Who carries them out, and who explains the results to me?
  • Which examinations make no sense for me?
  • Will I receive all results in writing?

Frequently asked questions

Will insurance pay for a check-up at a hotel?

Usually not, as this is preventive care at your own request. If you have private insurance, ask your insurer beforehand.

Can my partner come along without a check-up?

Yes. The houses are full hotels. Companions simply enjoy the spa and surroundings.

How do I prepare?

Bring previous results and a list of your medication. For some blood tests you need to fast; the house will tell you beforehand.
