Thermal spa cure

In short

A thermal spa cure is a stay centred on baths in warm spring water, often complemented by mud, exercise and massages. In Germany water counts as thermal water if it leaves the spring at 20 degrees Celsius or more.

Bathing in warm springs is one of the oldest forms of recovery. The Romans already built baths in Baden-Baden. Many German spa towns carry Bad in their name, a title for recognised healing spas.

Warm water relaxes the muscles and relieves the joints, because buoyancy carries the body's weight. Depending on the spring, the water contains minerals such as sulphur, brine or carbon dioxide. Local remedies such as peat mud or fango, which hold heat for a long time, come on top.

A classic, medically prescribed cure usually lasts three weeks. At a hotel the thermal cure is often shorter and more rest than therapy. Honestly: if your back, joints or stress are on your mind, you will find a very pleasant balance of warmth, rest and exercise here.

Good to know

  • Hot baths strain the circulation: better shorter and more often.
  • Mud and fango are pure heat; ask first if you have vein problems.
  • A medically prescribed cure is something different from a thermal weekend.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a thermal bath and a thermal cure?

At a thermal bath you bathe for a few hours. On a thermal cure the baths are part of a plan over several days or weeks, often with treatments and medical support.

How often should you bathe in thermal water?

Usually once a day for 20 to 30 minutes, followed by rest. Longer is not better, because warm water strains the circulation.
