LUXLY GLOSSARY

Mayr cure

In short

The Mayr cure is a medically supervised cure to relieve the gut, developed by the Austrian physician Franz Xaver Mayr. At its core are light meals eaten very slowly, rest and a manual abdominal treatment.

Origin
Austria, F.X. Mayr, early 20th century
Duration
At least 7, ideally 14 to 21 nights
Core
Light food, slow chewing, abdominal treatment
Suits
Digestion, weight, a fresh start with food

Franz Xaver Mayr (1875 to 1965) believed that many complaints are linked to an overloaded digestion. His cure rests on three principles: rest, cleansing and training. The gut should recover, and you should learn to eat consciously and slowly again.

Classically there were stale rolls and milk, chewed until almost liquid. Modern Mayr medicine is more flexible: depending on your results you eat light vegetable broths, alkaline food or gentle whole food. Add Epsom salt in the morning, abdominal treatment by the doctor, exercise and plenty of sleep.

The first days are often tiring, with fatigue or headaches. Afterwards many report more energy and a calmer stomach. The most important thing you take home: slow eating and a new sense of when you are full.

Good to know

  • Plan a few quiet days after the cure; the body needs time.
  • A Mayr cure should be medically supervised, especially with existing conditions.
  • It is not an indulgent holiday: no coffee, alcohol or raw food in the evening.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Mayr cure last?

At least one week; two to three are often recommended. Many houses offer packages from seven nights.

Do you lose weight on a Mayr cure?

Usually yes, because you eat little and light. But weight loss is not the actual goal; it is relieving the digestion and new eating habits.

What is the difference between the Mayr cure and therapeutic fasting?

With Buchinger fasting you almost completely avoid solid food. On a Mayr cure you eat, but very lightly and very slowly.
