Fasting is not all the same. Between juice and broth, small alkaline meals and a bread roll you chew for a long time lie worlds apart. Here is what kinds there are, how they feel and how to recognise a good fasting hotel.

At a glance
  • The best-known kinds: Buchinger therapeutic fasting, Mayr, Schroth and alkaline fasting.
  • At a hotel you fast with medical supervision, calm and a programme around it.
  • Not every kind suits everyone, and some people should not fast at all.

Why fast at a hotel?

Fasting at home is hard: the fridge, everyday life, appointments. At a fasting hotel everything is geared towards it. There is medical supervision, a kitchen that knows exactly what it is doing and a programme for the day so you are not only thinking about food.

Many guests come once a year, as a fixed break for body and mind.

The main kinds of fasting

Buchinger therapeutic fasting is the classic: vegetable broth, juices and tea, no solid food. The Mayr cure relies on small, light meals and slow chewing. The Schroth cure alternates drinking days and dry days, with wraps. Alkaline fasting is the gentlest: you eat proper meals, but only fruit, vegetables and herbs.

Which kind suits you depends on how strict you like it, how you cope with hunger and what your body tolerates.

  • Buchinger: the strictest, liquid only
  • Mayr cure: light meals, focus on the gut
  • Schroth cure: alternating drinking and dry days
  • Alkaline fasting: proper meals, plant-based only
The best fast is the one you can keep up and that suits your body.

How long should you fast?

Most houses recommend at least a week. The first two or three days are often the hardest; after that many report feeling lighter. Breaking the fast matters too: the body needs a few days to return to normal eating.

Who should not fast

Among others: during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with eating disorders, when underweight and with some chronic illnesses. Anyone taking medication should discuss it with a doctor first. A good fasting hotel asks carefully before letting you fast.

How to recognise a good fasting hotel

These points speak for a serious house:

  • A medical consultation before fasting
  • Several kinds of fasting to choose from
  • Support when breaking the fast
  • Movement and rest as part of the programme
  • Honest advice, even if fasting does not suit you

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose weight while fasting?

Usually yes, but part of it is water. The aim is rather a break for the body and new habits, not quick weight loss.

Am I hungry all the time?

Mainly in the first days. After that, hunger fades noticeably for many people. With Mayr and alkaline fasting you eat proper meals anyway.

Can I exercise while fasting?

Gentle movement such as walks, yoga or swimming is part of it. Avoid hard workouts.
